Histology of the sebaceous glands in acne

There are comparatively limited data on this aspect of the sebaceous gland, but it is beyond dispute that the sebaceous follicles are much larger in acne subjects than in most non-acne subjects. Bell investigated the cells of prepubertal and hypogonadal subjects.

Although the sebaceous  glands  of these  subjects  appeared much smaller  than those of adults,  the  cells in each  are qualitatively similar.  They  have  abundant agranular endoplasmic reticulum as do those of normal subjects. Nor could Knutson find any difference between acne and  non-acne  sebaceous  glands  as  far as the  fine structure of sebaceous cells was concerned.
