Topical isotretinoin in a  gel  formulation  has been shown significantly to reduce the number of noninflamed and inflamed lesions. The results were significantly better than placebo. The rate and degree of reduction were similar to those seen with topical antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide but at the time  of  writing no  direct comparison has been made.
